In order to promote digital access for all, Nantes Métropole has just begun the experimentation of free public WiFi on five places and two transit lines. The test will last a whole year and will consist of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the uses of WiFi in these public places of high affluence.
This evaluation phase will be based on the regular work of a citizen body composed of about twenty people with varied profiles: inhabitants, representatives of associations of traders, consumer protection, foresight of the risks of electromagnetic radiation ...
This instance, led by a specialized firm, will be responsible for identifying the needs and conversely the brakes on use and formulating recommendations for future deployment of WiFi on a larger scale in the city. The elected officials in particular wish to see the future deployment of public WiFi in addition to the WiFi offers already offered on the metropolis. Similarly, the free WiFi Service set up by QoS Telecom on the 7 current experimental sites requires no login and password, just a home screen that asks for the acceptance of the GTC by the user during its first connection. Then each new connection to a terminal automatically returns to a secure Internet.
This new phase of experimentation on the metropolis Nantaise follows in 2015 to a study of the Observatory of Digital Practices (study carried out with 1200 households) which revealed a very strong expectation in connection with free WIFI In public places, in particular those close to stations (65%), in public facilities (60%), in public transport (52%), in outdoor spaces (50%).
